Bismarck State College's Phoenix Program is an assessment
and exploration program designed to recruit and
prepare women for training and employment in nontraditional/
higher-wage careers. Nontraditional is defined as
occupations or fields of work for which individuals from
one gender comprise less than 25 percent. The definition
higher-wage also includes careers in computer science,
technology, medical, and other emerging high skill occupations.
During the one-semester program, students start their
general education requirement while exploring higher wage
careers. By the end of the semester, an educational and
financial plan is developed that meets the individual needs
of each student. The program offers supportive services in
three categories: financial, academic and job preparation.
The Phoenix Program has adapted its curriculum to
serve special populations, including single parents, displaced
homemakers, dislocated workers, women with disabilities,
and individuals with other barriers to educational
achievement.
