About Jean: "Biologist rate amongst the people most satisfied with their careers. That statement certainly fits our biology faculty. I love learning about all aspects of living things. As I age my interests expand. I am trained as an ornithologist (birds) but have recently focused on corals. I have a small coral reef in the student study lounge on the biology floor in the Jack Science Center. It is a beautiful example of living art. On a personal note, I have 3 sons that have offered me many great examples of growth and development to share with my classes, much to their dismay. I am an avid gardener. I much prefer being outside in all seasons. I am an active member of the Bismarck/Mandan bird club and I spend a lot of time sewing and listening to music. My next great ambitions are to learn to play classical guitar and learn to snowboard if we ever get a snowy winter."
Ronald Jyring
- Associate Professor of Biology (August 1996)
- B.A., University of Minnesota
- Ph.D., University of North Dakota
- Telephone: 701-224-5459
- Fax Number: 701-224-5680
About Ron: "Teaching is the primary mission of BSC.
However, I believe that research can and should be done at
community colleges too. Faculty that engage in research often
have a greater understanding of their fields and, equally
important, can provide students with opportunities to participate
in these projects. My formal education is in human anatomy, and I
have done research in cancer biology and cardiac development and
disease. Since it was not possible to continue research in those
areas at BSC, I have begun a smaller field study project. This
involves a survey of the areas around Bismarck for reptiles and
amphibians. This is an exciting project as very little work has
been done in this area. For example, in just a few short summers,
my students and I have collected over half a dozen species that
had not yet been described in Burleigh County. While herpetology,
the study of amphibians and reptiles, is a new area for me, I am
having a lot of fun learning, sharing, and exploring with my
students. Perhaps you would like to join us?"
Yvette Matthews
- Associate Professor of Science (August 1994)
- B.S., University of Minnesota
- M.S., University of North Dakota
- Telephone: 701-224-5586
- Fax Number: 701-224-5680
About Yvette: Yvette teaches Physical Science and
Biology. She developed and teaches Biology 296 Survey of Tropical
Biology. Biology 296 is a course designed to provide students
with a solid foundation in tropical biological concepts and field
census techniques as applied to tropical rainforest ecosystems.
The students travel to Costa Rica to experience a tropical
ecosystem.
