Concert Choir
The BSC Concert Choir performs a variety of music from the 16th to the 20th centuries, and is open to all interested BSC students. Current members are pursuing a variety of associate degrees in fields such as music, speech/communications, drama, pre-med, pre-dentistry, nursing, criminal justice, pre-law, education, psychology, optometry and power plant technology.
The choir regularly performs major choral works. Recent productions have included Verdi's "Requiem," Benjamin Britten's "Ceremony of Carols" accompanied by harpist Louise Zuern, John Rutter's "Gloria," "Christmas Cantata" by Daniel Pinkham , and Brahms' "Song of Destiny," performed in a joint production with the University of Mary Concert Choir.
Over the past seven years, the BSC ChoirFest has showcased the talents of nearly 1,000 singers including BSC students and students and teachers from area high schools. Guest conductors have included Dr. Eph Ehly (University of Missouri-Kansas City), Kathy Romey (University of Minnesota), Charles Bruffy (Kansas City Chorale), Dr. David Junker (Brazil), Dr. Bruce Vantine (Cornerstone Chorale) and Dr. Elmer Schock (Colorado).
Chamber Choir
The BSC Chamber Singers perform music from madrigals to jazz. The select ensemble provides entertainment at a variety of events for the college, within the community, and on tour.
Women's Ensemble
This select group of singers perform music in a variety of genres, specializing in contemporary music for treble voices. The Women's Ensemble performs at many events, including "Love Without Fear" benefit for the Abused Adult Resource Center, Bismarck Community Prayer Service following the events of September 11, 2001, and the 2002 ND American Choral Directors Association Showcase Concert.
Wind Ensemble
The Wind Ensemble is a performing group open to all BSC students who enjoy expression through instrumental music. It is a non-audition group and performs a wide variety of wind band literature. A concert in Sidney J. Lee Auditorium is held at the end of each semester. For more information e-mail
Chamber Winds
With enrollment in Wind Ensemble comes the opportunity to perform in small chamber groups such as Brass Quintet, Woodwind Ensemble, Percussion Ensemble or Trombone Quartet. These groups play at campus functions throughout the semester.
Jazz Ensemble
BSC Jazz Ensemble is open to select musicians by audition and membership in the Wind Ensemble. Jazz literature from all 20th century styles and improvisation are stressed in rehearsals and performances throughout the year.
Percussion Ensemble
Percussion Ensemble is open to all members of the BSC Wind Ensemble, regardless of their past experience on percussion. It offers students the opportunity to grow in their rhythmic and musical skills while also learning to play a variety of percussion instruments.
String Ensemble
Students in String Ensemble rehearse and perform chamber music written for small groups of string instruments. Music from different musical eras and the subsequent performance practices pertaining to those eras is covered. String Ensemble is open to all students with prior experience in the playing of a stringed instrument, and students encompass all levels of playing experience. Two formal concerts are given at the end of each semester.
Dakota Youth Symphony
The Dakota Youth Symphony rehearses and performs music written for full
symphony orchestra. The repertoire covers many different musical eras. Past
concerts have included Bartok's "Romanian Dances," Handel's "Music for the
Royal Fireworks," Mendelssohn's Wedding March from "A Midsummer Night's
Dream," and symphonies by Mozart and Haydn. A concert is given each
semester; the Fall concert is the Sunday afternoon before Thanksgiving and
the Spring concert is a Sunday afternoon in late April. The Spring concert
features student soloists from within the symphony, chosen by audition at the
annual Concerto Competition. The Dakota Youth Symphony is composed of
students of all ages (grade school through college) from the Bismarck/Mandan
area.
Guitar Summit
Guitar Summit is a two-day celebration of guitar. If you have ever played or thought about playing, Guitar Summit is for you! Education,
performance, and appreciation are what Guitar Summit is all about. Informative and entertaining clinics on playing in various styles, technique and theory, and the art of guitar making are offered. All playing levels and ages are welcome to participate and learn with some of the world's great guitarists of today.
Musical Theatre
Each spring students at BSC present a musical theater production. Shows of the recent past include "Company," "Little Shop of Horrors," "Cabaret," "Godspell," "Into the Woods,""110 in the Shade," "Baby," and "Damn Yankees." For more information e-mail Dan Rogers or call 701-224-5530.
Private Study
Students at Bismarck State College may elect to study voice, guitar, piano, organ, wind instruments, stringed instruments or percussion with a private instructor for college credit. Music majors include private study as part of their AA curriculum each semester. Group lessons are also available for voice and piano.
