The BSC Foundation is committed to the encouragement and support of academic excellence. Through the support of many generous benefactors, the BSC Foundation is able to budget more than $300,000 in scholarship awards to over 300 students. Scholarships are available to both incoming freshmen and sophomores. Receiving other scholarships will not disqualify applicants from receiving BSC Foundation Scholarships.

The BSC Foundation Scholarship Program was established for the purpose of attracting and retaining students of outstanding ability, regardless of gender, race, creed or national origin.

There are many different types of scholarships available from the BSC Foundation. Listed below are descriptions of each type of scholarship, the number that are awarded each year and the amount of the award per year. Please note the eligibility criteria. The following BSC Foundation scholarships are each $1,000 per year, awarded at $500 per semester. Recipients must carry 15 credit hours at BSC and earn a 3.0 GPA the first semester to qualify for the second semester award. Since scholastic achievement is the principal criteria, only students who have maintained a good academic record are encouraged to apply.

General Academic (101) Academic Scholarships will be awarded to students who have demonstrated academic excellence by earning at least a 3.0 GPA and performing well on ACT exams. Of the General Academic Scholarships, the following will be awarded provided the specific criteria are met.

  • Kadrmas, Lee, & Jackson Scholarships (2) Must be enrolled in the Engineering program. N.D. Society of Professional Engineers Scholarship (1) Must be enrolled in the Engineering program.
  • Francis Larson/J.C. Penney Scholarships (1) Preference will be given to individuals with an educational goal of obtaining a degree in Business Administration, Business & Office Education, Management, or similar field.
  • Walter L. and Lucille Braun Scholarship (4) Preference will be given to individuals with an educational goal of obtaining a degree in Business Administration, Business & Office Education, Management, or similar field. Any freshman or sophomore meeting the award preferences will be eligible. An award to a freshman will be considered a two-year award with the previously stated academic requirements applicable for continuing eligibility.
  • Patrick Atkinson Scholarships for Enriching North Dakota (3) $1000 per year. Preference will be given to non-traditional students returning to continue their educations and active volunteers in local and statewide charities, churches and communities. Students must also demonstrate a strong commitment to academic success in a field that has a direct and positive impact on improving health, education and community and economic development for North Dakota residents. Must carry a minimum of 15 credit hours and earn at least a 3.0 GPA to remain eligible for next term.

The following BSC Foundation scholarships are each $2,000 per year, awarded at $1,000 per semester. Recipients must carry 15 credit hours at BSC and earn a 3.5 GPA the first semester to qualify for the second semester award. Since scholastic achievement is the principal criteria, only students who have maintained a good academic record are encouraged to apply.

  • Ken & Anne Shaffer Scholarships (8) Must be enrolled in program which leads to a Bachelor's degree. An award to a freshman will be considered a two-year award with the previously stated academic requirements applicable for continuing eligibility. Four two-year academic scholarships are awarded each year to a freshman student.
  • Francis Larson/J.C. Penney Scholarships (1) Preference will be given to individuals with an educational goal of obtaining a degree in Business Administration, Business & Office Education, Management, or similar field.
  • Steven Harris Memorial Scholarship (1) Preference will be given to individuals pursuing a degree in the sciences.
  • Sam and Bertha Merritt Scholarship (1) Awarded to students who have demonstrated academic excellence.
  • Dan Chesak Memorial Scholarship (2) Awarded to students who have demonstrated academic excellence.

Journalism scholarships will be awarded to students with special journalism skills, with scholarships for the editors of the Mystician and the annual literary art magazine, "Figments." Journalism scholarships are each $500 per year, awarded at $250 per semester. Recipients must carry 12 credit hours at BSC and earn 2.5 GPA first semester to qualify for second semester.

  • Mystician Editors (8) - Recipients must serve as staff members of the Mystician and demonstrate satisfactory service on the Mystician staff to remain eligible. The recommendation for this scholarship should be submitted by an advisor or instructor in the journalism field.
  • Literary Arts Editors (2) - scholarships are awarded spring semester to Editor and Editor-in-Chief of the literary arts magazine, Figments of Imagination. In addition to satisfactory service recipients must carry 12 credit hours at BSC and earn 2.5 GPA. Recipients of Literary Arts scholarships may qualify for other scholarships.

Part-time scholarships are awarded on a semester basis; students are required to re-apply for each subsequent semester. Recipients must be taking classes to fulfill requirements of a degree-seeking program. Must have completed a minimum of 12 credits from BSC in the last three years, maintain a minimum of a 3.0 GPA and be enrolled in at least 3 credit hours per semester. Must be a North Dakota resident. Performing Arts Scholarships (32) are each $500 per year, awarded at $250 per semester. Recipients must carry 12 credit hours at BSC and earn 2.5 GPA first semester to qualify for second semester. The Performing Arts include Chorus, Band, Theater and Technical Theater; scholarships will be awarded to students who have special talent in those areas. Recipients must participate in performing arts activities at BSC within their area of talent. The recommendation for this scholarship should be submitted by an advisor or art instructor in the applicant's area of talent.

There are five $1,000 Academic Music Major Scholarships available to participants in the Performing Arts. Recipients must carry 12 credit hours at BSC and earn 2.5 GPA first semester to qualify for second semester. Must declare Music as the major area of study. Visual Arts scholarships (13) are each $500 per year, awarded at $250 per semester. Recipients must carry 12 credit hours at BSC and earn a 2.5 GPA the first semester to qualify for second semester. Visual Arts Scholarships will be awarded to students who have special talent in the visual arts area (drawing, painting, sculpture, jewelry, etc.) The recipient must participate in Visual Arts Program at BSC. The recommendation for this scholarship should be submitted by an advisor or instructor in the applicant's area of talent.

  • Agriculture, Technology and Natural Resources Scholarships (9) $500 per year. BSC Foundation provides the Leonard Larshus Memorial Scholarship and eight Ervin and Dorothy Bourgois Memorial Scholarships for students enrolled in the Agriculture, Technology and Natural Resources (ATNR) program. Nine first year students will receive a $500 scholarship/payable at $250 per semester. Awards are based upon academic achievement and extracurricular activities. The recipients must be full time students in their first year, carry a minimum of 15 credit hours and maintain a 2.5 GPA for fall semester to receive payment for spring semester.   • Allen Energy Scholarship (1) $1,000 per year. Must be accepted into one of BSC's Online Energy Programs. The recipient must carry a minimum of 6 credit hours at BSC and maintain a 3.0 GPA each term to receive the payment for the next term. A special application is required for this scholarship.   • Alliance Pipeline - Wayne Schonert Memorial Scholarship (2) $1,000 per year. Must be enrolled in the Electronics/Telecommunications Technology program. The recipients must be full time students in their second year and maintain a 2.00 grade point average for fall semester to receive the payment for the next term. A special application is required for this scholarship. Please contact the Foundation office.
  • Air Conditioning, Heating and Refrigeration Scholarship (1) $1,000 spring semester. Must be enrolled in the Air Conditioning, Heating and Refrigeration program. Must carry 15 credit hours at BSC and earn 2.50 GPA to qualify. A special application is required for this scholarship. Please contact the Foundation office.
  • Basin Electric Welding Scholarship (1) $500 per year. Must be enrolled in the Welding program. Awarded based on academic achievement and participation in the program. Must carry 12 credits and earn 2.5 GPA to remain eligible for next term. A special application is required for this scholarship. Please contact the Foundation office.
  • Board of Governors Scholarship (1) $1,000 per year. Awarded to the President of the BSC Board of Governors. The award shall be contingent on successfully carrying out the assigned duties as president of the BSC Board of Governors as determined by the BSC Director of Student Life.
  • Carpentry Scholarship (1) $1,000 per year. Must be enrolled in the Carpentry program. Must carry 12 credit hours at BSC and earn 2.5 GPA to qualify for next term. A special application is required for this scholarship. Please contact the Foundation office.
  • Cash for Our Kids Scholarships (7) $1,000 per year. Must be a child of a BSC employee. Must carry a minimum of 12 credit hours at BSC both semesters and maintain at least a 2.5 GPA to remain eligible for this scholarship. A special application is required for this scholarship.   • Corvettes of Dakota Territory Automotive Technology Scholarship (1) $500 per year. Must be enrolled in the Automotive Technology program. Awarded based on academic achievement and participation in the program. Must carry a minimum of 15 credit hours and earn at least a 3.0.GPA to remain eligible for next term.   • Energy Generation Conference Scholarship (1) Recipients must be accepted in the Power Plant or Process Plant Technology Program to be eligible for this scholarship. Recipients must carry 15 credit hours at BSC and earn 3.0 GPA to qualify for next term. A special application is required for this scholarship. Please contact the Foundation office.
  • Frank Bavendick Academic Athletic Scholarship (1) $1,000 per year. Must participate in the Athletic Program at BSC and be in good academic standing. Must carry 12 credit hours and earn a 2.50 GPA to qualify for next term. Please see the Athletic Director for more information on this scholarship.
  • Frank Gilchrist Academic Athletic Scholarship (1) $2,000 per year. Scholarship will be awarded to a sophomore student. Must participate in the Athletic Program at BSC and be in good academic standing. Must carry 15 credit hours and earn a 2.50 to qualify for next term.   • Great River Energy Mechanical Maintenance Scholarship (3) $500 scholarships payable for spring semester. Recipient must be accepted in the BSC Mechanical Maintenance program to be eligible for this scholarship, must carry 12 credit hours and earn 3.0 GPA in at least one semester to receive spring award. A special application is required for this scholarship. Please contact the Foundation office or mechanical maintenance program faculty.
  • Great River Energy Welding Scholarship (3) $500 scholarships payable for spring semester. Must be enrolled in the Welding program. Awarded based on academic achievement and participation in the program. Must carry 12 credits and earn 3.0 GPA in at least one semester to receive spring award.   • Great River Energy Instrumentation & Control (3) $500 scholarships payable for spring semester. Must be enrolled in the Instrumentation & Control program. Awarded based on academic achievement and participation in the program. Must carry 12 credit hours and earn 3.0 GPA in at least one semester to receive spring award.   • Jerome Distributing (1) $2,000 per year. Must participate in the Athletic Program at BSC and be in good academic standing. Must carry 15 credit hours and earn a 2.50 to qualify for next term. Please see the Athletic Director for more information on this scholarship
  • Madison Gas & Electric Scholarship (2) $1,000 payable at spring semester. Recipient must be accepted in the Power Plant Technology Program to be eligible for this scholarship and must carry 15 credit hours and earn a 3.0 GPA for the fall term to receive the award for the spring semester.
  • Midcontinent Cable Scholarship (2) $1,000 per year. Recipient must be accepted in the Electronics or Telecommunications Program to be eligible for this scholarship and must carry 15 credit hours and earn at least a 3.0 GPA.
  • Roughrider Impala Association Automotive Technology Scholarship (1) $500 per year. Must be enrolled in the Automotive Technology program. Awarded based on academic achievement and participation in the program. Must carry a minimum of 15 credit hours and earn at least a 3.0.GPA to remain eligible for next term.   • Online Power Plant/Online Electrical Transmission Systems Technology programs - Otter Tail Power Company (4) $2,000 scholarships payable spring semester. Recipient must be accepted in the BSC Online Power Plant Technology program or the BSC Online Electrical Transmissions Systems program to be eligible for this scholarship and must carry 12 credit hours and earn a 3.0 GPA for the fall term to receive the award in spring.   • Electrical Lineworker - Otter Tail Power Company (3) $2,000 scholarships payable for spring semester. Recipient must be accepted in the BSC Electrical Lineworker program to be eligible for this scholarship and must carry 12 credit hours and earn a 3.0 GPA for the fall term to receive the award in spring. This award is based upon academic achievement with consideration given to financial need. A special application is required for this scholarship.   • Mechanical Maintenance - Otter Tail Power Company (5) $2,000 scholarships payable for spring semester. Recipient must be accepted in the BSC Mechanical Maintenance program to be eligible for this scholarship and must carry 12 credit hours and earn a 3.0 GPA for the fall term to receive the award in spring. This award is based upon academic achievement with consideration given to financial need. A special application is required for this scholarship.   • Power Plant Technology program on the BSC campus - Otter Tail Power Company (4) $2,000 scholarships payable for spring semester. Recipient must be accepted in the BSC Power Plant Technology program on the BSC campus to be eligible for this scholarship and must carry 12 credit hours and earn a 3.0 GPA for the fall term to receive the award in spring.   • Xcel Energy Scholarship (1) $1,000 per year. Must be accepted into one of BSC's Online Energy Programs. The recipient must carry a minimum of 6 credit hours at BSC and maintain a 3.0 GPA each term to receive the payment for the next term. A special application is required for this scholarship.   • The Hites Family Foundation/Walt and Norma Fiedler Scholarship provides up to $4,000 distributed over two years for graduates of Bismarck State College (BSC) to continue their studies at baccalaureate degree-granting colleges or universities. Criteria for the scholarship include a minimum of 50 semester hours completed at BSC at the time of transferring, a cumulative GPA average of 3.5 or better, and acceptance into and enrollment at an accredited four-year institution leading to a baccalaureate degree.
