Masters began her BSC tenure in 1984 as an English instructor teaching literature, poetry and writing. She assumed chair of the Arts and Communication Department in 1999 while continuing to teach. Masters was appointed assistant dean of instruction in 2001 and accepted a promotion to dean of faculty in 2003. She was named dean of academic affairs in 2007 to oversee curriculum, programming, and faculty matters.
A recipient of the Staff Award for Excellence, Masters is known for mediating creative solutions to issues and vision for enriching teaching quality and student life. Among her initiatives are BSC Campus Read, ArtsQuest founding committee, faculty mentoring program, Iron Professor competition for teaching excellence, service learning (college credit for public service), and arranging at BSC the first Fulbright faculty exchange program at North Dakota colleges. Raised in Niobe, N.D., Masters has a doctorate in English from the University of North Dakota, MA in English from Rollins College, Winter Park, Fla., and BS in English and education from Minot State University. She taught English in Thailand for the Peace Corps and in New Town, N.D., after college. Before coming to BSC, Masters was an adult education instructor at a Florida vocational school and directed adult education at Turtle Mountain Community College, Belcourt, N.D. She is a published essayist and poet.

Hagel is responsible for managing the dean's office and overseeing the coordination and completion of reports and projects. She works with the dean, department chairs, and chief of distance learning and military affairs officer to develop faculty contracts and payroll orders. In addition, Hagel maintains records on faculty evaluations, position descriptions, course syllabi and advisory committees.
